Search in Rotated Sorted Array

Asked at:AmazonGoogleMicrosoft

A sorted array was rotated at some unknown pivot, so a sorted sequence like [0, 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7] might become [4, 5, 6, 7, 0, 1, 2]. Given the rotated array and a target value, return the index of the target, or -1 if it doesn't exist. Your solution must run in O(log n) time.

Problem

There is an integer array nums sorted in ascending order (with distinct values). Given the array nums after the possible rotation and an integer target, return the index of target if it is in nums, or -1 if it is not in nums.

Input

A rotated sorted array `nums` of distinct integers, and an integer `target`.

Output

The index of `target` in `nums`, or -1 if it is not present.

Examples

Input: nums = [4, 5, 6, 7, 0, 1, 2], target = 0

Output: 4

0 is at index 4.

Input: nums = [4, 5, 6, 7, 0, 1, 2], target = 3

Output: -1

3 is not in the array.

Input: nums = [1], target = 0

Output: -1

Single-element array doesn't contain 0.

The brute-force approach

Scan the array linearly until you find the target.

for i in range(len(nums)):
    if nums[i] == target:
        return i
return -1

O(n), visits every element. The problem guarantees distinct values and a rotated sorted array, which means binary search applies if you can figure out which half is sorted at each step.

Time: O(n)Space: O(1)

Spotting the pattern

This is a Binary Search problem. The key question to ask yourself:

When I compute a midpoint in a rotated array, how do I know which half to search next?

Answering that is where it clicks, and it's exactly what the guided walkthrough below builds with you: the pattern reasoning, a progressive hint ladder that never spoils the answer, a row-by-row dry run, the optimized solution, and an in-browser editor to run your code against real test cases.

What you get

  • The full guided learning path: concept lessons, drills, graded tests, and cold-read capstones for every pattern
  • Stop going blank on algorithm problems. The hint ladder walks you to the answer without spoiling it.
  • Actually internalize the trace: dry runs walk state row by row so it clicks before you write a line
  • Know when to reach for each pattern. Every problem names the trigger so you spot it next time.
  • Write and run JS or Python in the browser with real test cases on every problem

“This app finally made it click. I tried NeetCode, CTCI, and YouTube for years and still couldn't solve Two Sum. The beginner mental models for the patterns are genuinely so helpful. THANK YOU.
