Problem
Given a string s, find the length of the longest substring without duplicate characters.
Input
A string `s` (may contain letters, digits, symbols, and spaces).
Output
An integer, the length of the longest substring with all distinct characters.
Examples
Input: s = "abcabcbb"
Output: 3
"abc" is the longest substring without repeating characters (length 3).
Input: s = "bbbbb"
Output: 1
The only valid substring is a single "b".
Input: s = "pwwkew"
Output: 3
"wke" has length 3. Note: "pwke" is a subsequence, not a substring.
The brute-force approach
Try every possible starting index. From each start, extend as far right as possible while characters are unique. Track the maximum length found.
max_len = 0
for i in 0 .. n - 1:
seen = set()
for j in i .. n - 1: # ← nested loop
if s[j] in seen:
break
seen.add(s[j])
max_len = max(max_len, j - i + 1)
return max_lenO(n²), for each start position, you rebuild a set and scan forward. The sliding window approach reuses work across iterations instead of starting from scratch each time.
Spotting the pattern
This is a Sliding Window problem. The key question to ask yourself:
Can I maintain a window of valid characters and slide it across the string in one pass?
Answering that is where it clicks, and it's exactly what the guided walkthrough below builds with you: the pattern reasoning, a progressive hint ladder that never spoils the answer, a row-by-row dry run, the optimized solution, and an in-browser editor to run your code against real test cases.

What you get
- ✓The full DSA course: concept lessons, drills, graded tests, and cold-read capstones for every pattern
- ✓The full System Design course: 20 building-block units for the design round, included at no extra cost
- ✓Stop going blank on algorithm problems. The hint ladder walks you to the answer without spoiling it.
- ✓Actually internalize the trace: dry runs walk state row by row so it clicks before you write a line
- ✓Know when to reach for each pattern. Every problem names the trigger so you spot it next time.
- ✓Write and run JS or Python in the browser with real test cases on every problem
- ✓Access every new problem, unit, and pattern guide as they ship weekly
“This app finally made it click. I tried NeetCode, CTCI, and YouTube for years and still couldn't solve Two Sum. The beginner mental models for the patterns are genuinely so helpful. THANK YOU.”
