Combination Sum

Asked at:AmazonGoogleMeta

Given an array of distinct integers and a target, return all unique combinations where the chosen numbers sum to target. You may reuse the same number unlimited times.

This is a premium problem.

Unlock Combination Sum with both full courses, DSA and System Design, and every other premium problem.

Problem

Given an array of distinct integers candidates and a target integer target, return a list of all unique combinations of candidates where the chosen numbers sum to target. The same number may be chosen from candidates an unlimited number of times.

Input

An integer array `candidates` (distinct integers) and an integer `target`.

Output

A list of all unique combinations that sum to `target`. Order within each combination doesn't matter.

Examples

Input: candidates = [2,3,6,7], target = 7

Output: [[2,2,3],[7]]

2+2+3=7 and 7=7.

Input: candidates = [2,3], target = 6

Output: [[2,2,2],[3,3]]

The brute-force approach

Generate all possible combinations using recursion. At each step, try including each candidate (with repeats allowed). Collect combinations that sum to target.

result = []
def backtrack(start, path, remaining):
    if remaining == 0:
        result.append(list(path))
        return
    if remaining < 0:
        return
    for i in range(start, len(candidates)):
        path.append(candidates[i])
        backtrack(i, path, remaining - candidates[i])   # i, not i+1 (allow reuse)
        path.pop()
backtrack(0, [], target)

This is already the standard approach. The key optimization is passing `start` to avoid duplicates (don't go back to earlier candidates).

Time: O(n^(t/min))Space: O(t/min)

Spotting the pattern

This is a Backtracking problem. The key question to ask yourself:

Why do you pass `start` (the current index) to the recursive call instead of 0? What would happen if you passed 0 every time?

Answering that is where it clicks, and it's exactly what the guided walkthrough below builds with you: the pattern reasoning, a progressive hint ladder that never spoils the answer, a row-by-row dry run, the optimized solution, and an in-browser editor to run your code against real test cases.

Already finished Big-O and Hash Maps free? This picks up right where the path leads: same format, harder patterns, the ones that show up in every FAANG-style screen.

What you get

  • The full DSA course: concept lessons, drills, graded tests, and cold-read capstones for every pattern
  • The full System Design course: 20 building-block units for the design round, included at no extra cost
  • Stop going blank on algorithm problems. The hint ladder walks you to the answer without spoiling it.
  • Actually internalize the trace: dry runs walk state row by row so it clicks before you write a line
  • Know when to reach for each pattern. Every problem names the trigger so you spot it next time.
  • Write and run JS or Python in the browser with real test cases on every problem
  • Access every new problem, unit, and pattern guide as they ship weekly

“This app finally made it click. I tried NeetCode, CTCI, and YouTube for years and still couldn't solve Two Sum. The beginner mental models for the patterns are genuinely so helpful. THANK YOU.
