Container With Most Water
You're given an array where each value represents the height of a vertical line drawn at that index. Find two lines that, together with the horizontal axis, form a container that holds the most water. Return the maximum amount of water the container can hold.

Problem
You are given an integer array height of length n. Find two lines that together with the x-axis form a container, such that the container contains the most water. Return the maximum amount of water a container can store.
Input
An integer array `height` of length n, where `height[i]` is the height of the line at position i.
Output
An integer, the maximum area (volume of water) any two lines can contain.
Examples
Input: height = [1, 8, 6, 2, 5, 4, 8, 3, 7]
Output: 49
Lines at index 1 (height 8) and index 8 (height 7) form a container. Width = 8 - 1 = 7. Height = min(8, 7) = 7. Area = 7 × 7 = 49.
Input: height = [1, 1]
Output: 1
Only two lines. Width = 1, height = min(1, 1) = 1. Area = 1.
Input: height = [4, 3, 2, 1, 4]
Output: 16
Lines at index 0 (height 4) and index 4 (height 4). Width = 4, height = 4. Area = 16.
The brute-force approach
Try every pair of lines. For each pair (i, j), the area is min(height[i], height[j]) × (j - i). Track the maximum across all pairs.
max_area = 0
for i in range(len(height)):
for j in range(i + 1, len(height)): # ← all pairs
area = min(height[i], height[j]) * (j - i)
max_area = max(max_area, area)
return max_areaChecking every pair is O(n²), for 1000 lines that's 500,000 pair checks. The key insight is that you can eliminate huge chunks of pairs without checking them, because moving toward the center from the taller side can never improve the area.
Spotting the pattern
This is a Two Pointers problem. The key question to ask yourself:
Starting from both ends, which pointer should I move inward to have a chance of finding a larger container?
Answering that is where it clicks, and it's exactly what the guided walkthrough below builds with you: the pattern reasoning, a progressive hint ladder that never spoils the answer, a row-by-row dry run, the optimized solution, and an in-browser editor to run your code against real test cases.

What you get
- ✓The full DSA course: concept lessons, drills, graded tests, and cold-read capstones for every pattern
- ✓The full System Design course: 20 building-block units for the design round, included at no extra cost
- ✓Stop going blank on algorithm problems. The hint ladder walks you to the answer without spoiling it.
- ✓Actually internalize the trace: dry runs walk state row by row so it clicks before you write a line
- ✓Know when to reach for each pattern. Every problem names the trigger so you spot it next time.
- ✓Write and run JS or Python in the browser with real test cases on every problem
- ✓Access every new problem, unit, and pattern guide as they ship weekly
“This app finally made it click. I tried NeetCode, CTCI, and YouTube for years and still couldn't solve Two Sum. The beginner mental models for the patterns are genuinely so helpful. THANK YOU.”
